What is Color Temperature and Why is it Important?

Modern LED fixtures and bulbs can offer a wide range of color temperatures to suit individual preferences. Color temperature refers to the measurement of a light source on the Kelvin scale. LED fixtures can be tailored to match specific color temperatures, or sometimes they offer a range of color temperatures based on personal preferences.

In North America, we are more accustomed to color temperatures similar to incandescent bulbs, which emit a warm light measuring around 2700-3000K on the Kelvin scale. Consequently, the most popular color temperature for residential LED fixtures and bulbs is Warm White.

For residential outdoor lighting, Warm White (2700-3000K) is the preferred choice as it creates a friendly and inviting ambiance. In contrast, cooler color temperatures like Daylight White (5000K) are often used for commercial lighting settings.

Indoors, most home lighting aims for a warm ambiance, with possible exceptions in hallways, bathrooms, or dressing rooms. Bright White (4000K) is preferable in hallways as it adds a brighter, whiter light, making the space feel larger and more expansive. In bathrooms and dressing rooms, Bright White (4000K) or Daylight White (5000K) color temperatures help achieve a more natural, sunlight-like illumination.

Our indoor lighting products are available in Warm White (3000K) and Bright White (4000K). Some of our indoor fixtures feature a Color Select switch, allowing you to choose your desired color temperature (3000K, 4000K, or 5000K).

Color Rendering Index (CRI)

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures how accurately an LED fixture reproduces colors compared to direct daylight at noon, which is assigned a value of 100. For outdoor fixtures used at night, a CRI of 80 is sufficient. However, for indoor LED fixtures, it is recommended to choose fixtures with a CRI of at least 80, and ideally 90, for the best representation of colors in clothing and makeup. If a product does not list its CRI, it is likely of low quality.
